Another successful comp for Canberra X-Factor at what could arguably be the most beautiful Flyball competition venue in the country, if not the world.
At Canberra's Rond Terraces directly opposite old and new Parliament Houses, with Canberra's iconic balloons hovering above a shimmering Lake Burley Griffin, the X-Factor X-tremes took out 2nd place in a primarily relaxed comp with a few nerve-wracking moments thanks to the exuberant Max and his victory dances crossing the line.
Jasper, Humphrey, Russ, Russell and Zac loved the day's racing and did us proud.

ANZAC DAY a rest day for Flyballers

Not many spectators, but a couple of enquiries from young dogs who might join us one day.

Demo Report - Tuggeranong Dogs Day Out

A very hot afternoon - well before the end of the day the dogs and the spectators were looking for somewhere cooler to be.
From Kathleen: 'Boomer was pretty good, and the crowd apparently all went “awwwww” when he ran! Lol! Fletch was extremely flakey and didn’t do much right at all! Mainly just chased the other team (regardless of how close I took him to the box) *shakes head*! I wonder if he will ever be able to focus at comps!' From us: 'Yes he will Kathleen, one day he'll put it all together and make you proud......hang in there and have faith in your little man.'

Logan was a standout, running flawlessly with the team – such a show-off! The ever reliable Jenna surprised us all – she kept smelling yummy treats in the grass and preferred to go searching for those than do flyball! Jasper, Humphrey and Mitch were all their wonderful selves. Dougal made an appearance too. All in all, a great day.

Remember, Sunday afternoon training goes back to 1pm on Sunday 11 April.

Changes for Sunday 28 March

This Sunday is an Obedience Competition Day at our training grounds, so there is a slight change to training for Flyball. Instead of training at 1pm we will be staging a flyball demonstration at 11.30am (setup at 11.00am).

This will be a great experience for beginners to show off their stuff in front of a crowd, and for more seasoned flyballers to get some much needed practice, with handlers proudly wearing their new uniforms!

Afterwards, some of us will be travelling to the Tuggeranong Dogs Day Out for another demo. This time last year, this is where we first met Boomer and Fletch....both of whom are now competing for Canberra X-Factor.

Hopefully we'll meet some more potential new team mates at these events on Sunday.

Sunday training times move back to 1pm on Sunday 11 April.

Moss Vale in March

A convoy of 7 cars and 10 dogs made their way to the Moss Vale Show on Saturday 13 March, to become part of the entertainment for the day with 3 'performances' alongside showjumping, horse wrangling, watermelon skiing, polocrosse and boot throwing.

It was a fun day at a Show with a friendly spirit. Mitch, Max, Jenna, Russ, Russell, Boomer, Dougal and Fletch attracted happy crowds who loved the antics (good and bad) of all the dogs. We had Blonde dogs running against 'little dogs and Max', we had teams of two big dogs and one little dog running against each other, we had kids trying to outrun dogs, little girls learning boxloading, and ALL dogs (amazingly) ignoring the nearby horses. Dougal achieved several 'Over, Around and Over' without the stick and without losing concentration, Fletch loved the crowd, Ebbi managed to stop shaking long enough to do three or four box turns before running back to her house, and little Szuszi did two Overs to show how the beginners learn.

The Show organisers were really appreciative and sent us home with promises to come back next year. One short video showing you just a small part of the day's action - our videographer Des was too busy running Max to take much more than this.

A great start to 2010

Canberra Royal 27 & 28 February - new slideshow on the menu bar

We fielded a single team at the Canberra Royal, where we debuted our new Canberra X-Factor T-shirts: Jaci & Jasper, Claire & Humphrey, Des, Marianne & Max, Kathleen & Boomer, Catherine, Neil & Russell and Peter & Russ outperformed all expectations and finished 2nd in a big division of 7 teams.

Peter's fantastic poem sums up the weekend:

The Canberra show and flyball was what we were about

Us dogs had put in the training for many weeks before

We all knew what we had come to the Show for,

That Us dogs being Jasper, Russell, Russ, Humphrey, Boomer, Max

Could get the job done over the next 2 days

Saturday opened bright and clear and we launched into the fray

The little dogs ran hard being without fear

Russ and Humphrey held their form

Jasper and Max did the rest with wins coming Oh so fast

Saturday racing finished, a brilliant win in race seven, we could be in first place!

A good nights sleep and plenty of fooood, what would Sunday hold?

What a start on Sunday we had! Wins coming thick and fast

3 heats to blot, time and again…did the heads begin to swell?

Then it was lunch or was it not? A time breakout occurred of 23.2.

OH No, No, I heard some humans say

We lost that race with 2 to go, could we still do it though?

Another 3 blot, a sigh of relief, the title was still within our grasp

We all held our breath for the last, would our hearts explode?

It was one heat each all, or was it two?

Time stopped still, Russ crossed the finish line

AH, the ball dropped out of that ever safe mouth to the other lane

And, as you can guess, ‘That was it!’

For it was ‘THE RUN THAT COUNTS’

Reigning Cats & Dogs in Boorowa!

As ever, Boorowa lived up to its reputation as a fun comp, despite the miserable cold and rain. Participating in the street parade that follows the running of the sheep is such a novelty, and the 'fashion parade' for Flyball teams is what makes this comp unique.

Canberra X-Factor pulled off a win this year with our theme of 'Cats and Dogs' - it certainly helped that it almost rained cats and dogs all day, and that dry inland towns like Boorowa are in a constant state of wanting it to rain cats and dogs.

As for the racing: X-Factor X-perienced (Jasper, Dharma, Lucy, Kiera and Dusty) came 2nd in Division 2, and X-Factor X-perts (Sophie, Russell, Burra, Humphrey, Max and Boomer) came 4th in Division 3, with Burra reaching his all important Onyx (1300 points) in the last race of the day.

• Beginner Neil handling Russell perfectly as start dog in race 4

• Boomer overcoming his early nervous search for his dad to run like a champion for the rest of the day

• Max completing a whole comp at blistering speed without a card for crossing over (his handler has obviously perfected the technique of getting Max to come back)

• Sophie's excellent starts no matter who was handling her

Demons at Dapto

We sent one team to Dapto last Sunday - and racing in such horrendously windy conditions that the Signature lights had to be replaced with old fashioned countdowns and whistles, our Division 2 team managed a stunning first place in Division 2.
Jaci has promised to provide some photos as soon as she gets a spare minute.....
Meanwhile, no training this Sunday whilst we send two teams to the fun of the Boorowa Irish Flyball Fling.

Kings and Queens of Kioloa

As usual, Kioloa was a fantastic competition, with good spirits and great racing from all the travelling teams. The sun shone down on us, the dogs raced their hearts out, and Canberra X-Factor celebrated some major achievements during the day.
• Boomer earned his Flyball Dog title - the little star!
• Humphrey earned his Flyball Dog title - the big star!
• Dusty earned his Flyball Dog title - the middle sized star!
• Jasper became a Flyball Master by reaching 400 points - the quiet achiever star!
and
• Zac gained his Onyx Award by reaching 1300 points - the little devil star!

X-Factor X-perts lived up to their name for once by actually coming first - Well done to Jasper, Jenna, Tansy, Dusty, Foxie Lady and Max.

Lucy, Dharma, Zac, Sophie and Kiera of X-Factor X-perienced and the X-Factor X-tremes Russ, Humphrey, Rocket, Peanut and Boomer didn't earn a trophy but they had fun in the sun, lovely swims, good racing and plenty to dream about on the long trip home.

Southerly Muster Sensations!

We sent one team to the Southerly Muster last Saturday - and boy, did they do us proud! Canberra X-Factor's team came first in 3rd Division, beating the newly formed 'Mudd on the Paws' by 3-one-hundredths of a second in a countback. Congratulations to Dharma, Jasper, Lucy, Sophie and Kiera.

Meanwhile, we welcomed Ollie back to his second week of training on Sunday (his new best friend is Humphrey) and also welcomed Pooka to her first day of learning Overs and Arounds.

How We Are Growing!

What a fantastic day at X-Factor training yesterday - with almost a full complement of regulars, some old faces we haven't seen for a while, 3 brand new beginners, 2 not-so-new beginners, the dynamic duo of Boomer and Fletch still going strong, and even baby Mojo putting in an appearance.

With Dharma, Jasper, Jenna, Sophie, Lucy, Russ, Mitch, Kiera, Burra, Dusty, Tansy, Rocket, Max, and Peanut all there it was full-on-action with 2 competing lanes, an intermediate training post to the side, and the second paddock dedicated to beginner's lessons of Over and Around.

ALBURY BORDER CHALLENGE CUP

Well, the biggest challenge at the Albury Border Challenge Cup was managing the enthusiasm of the X-Factor X-Perts who put on such a spurt of speed that they managed to break out (not once, not twice, but almost every time they ran!) and thereby achieve last place in their division. Lucy, Keira, Burra, Max, Peanut and Jenna all ran their little hearts out, excited by the atmosphere in the cold, cold, shed, and no doubt spurred on by the intensity of all that barking (it's a great all-weather venue but boy! is it noisy!).

This team could only manage a best time of 26 seconds at training, and here they were consistently running just over 23 seconds time and time again. Never mind, they all had the time of their lives, and we managed to get away with just 2 yellow cards (no prizes for guessing which two kelpies did the victory laps that achieved these yellow cards) for the day as well.

Our other team, X-factor X-press (Sophie, Dharma, Zac, Jasper and Boomer) came 3rd in a large division, after an exciting day that included a tied heat (how is that possible when we are timing them to one thousandth of a second?), a tied race, Sophie running 3 consecutive heats at 3.9 seconds, and Boomer ending the day completely exhausted from the stress of doing perfect recalls all day long during his first ever competition

Preparing for Albury Border Challenge Cup

Gary brought his lights to training yesterday, so we were able to clock times for some of the dogs who will be traveling to Albury later this month.

We won't be revealing any secrets on this blog (got to stay competitive!) but the non-competitive- almost-blind Ebbi recorded a personal best of just over 6 seconds in her fun practice session team with Zac (who will be racing) and Boomer (who is still learning).

Highlights of the day:

• Dharma racing (perfectly) for her real mother who is back from holiday

• Max barking

• Beginner Minky showing a lovely willingness to learn 'around the pole'

• Peanut recording a blinding (but secret) speed

• Tansy and Rocket performing beautifully after several weeks away

What a great training afternoon, with so many beginners keenly doing Overs and Arounds in a lane right beside the more experienced dogs practising their racing skills.

Freddie and Dougal have been away for a few weeks but haven't forgotten their Overs......

Boomer has recovered from the incident on Wednesday when he knocked over the jump......

Susie (at her second training session!) is doing full recalls, and already going Around on the box....

Minky (at her first training session) is keen learn Overs and VERY motivated by chicken......

and Fletch is doing lovely Arounds on the box - all four feet and no silly stick......

Meanwhile, Kiera and Burra and Max and Jenna and Dharma were racing, racing, racing their hearts out, getting in form for the Albury Border Challenge Cup in a month's time.

Training, training

Last night was another dark and dreary night in Canberra, with just a small group braving the weather to attend flyball training. But that's not all bad, it provides more time for attention to detail. Boomer, who's been doing lovely full runs for a beginner, got too enthusiastic and knocked over a jump, making him somewhat less keen to do his 'Overs' the next time.

As well as encouraging Boomer to return to wholehearted Overs, we decided that everyone should practice full runs over a downed jump - and Jasper, Foxie Lady, Dharma, Max and even Humphrey all 'took it in their stride', no matter which jump we pushed over. Good practice for when it happens in a competition.

Then we decided to try to something new to encourage Max and Humphrey to get all four feet up on the box. Both of them can do this without the ball involved, but as soon as the ball is introduced these big dogs start 'slamming'. We've been struggling with placing a pole in front of the box during the full run, but anyone who's tried this knows how difficult it is with a big dog running at speed. Here's a video to show our new technique is working.

Now all we have to do is figure out how to remove the white post altogether!

Winter Training

It may be cold, it may be dark here in Canberra's winter but at the Canberra X-Factor Flyball Team we continue to train on Wednesday nights at 7pm and on Sunday afternoons at 1pm, unless it is raining steadily or we are away at a competition.
Since we began mixed training sessions (with beginner dogs joining more advanced dogs) we've welcomed some delightful, excited and talented newcomers.....the gentle Humphrey, the quick and bouncy Boomer, the slightly more reticent but very sweet Fletch. The mixed training sessions seem to be working really well......beginner dogs are being 'distraction proofed' from their first lesson and are also immediately welcomed into the social atmosphere of playtime after every training session.

A great comp on Sunday 30 November, in a lovely location by the lake. X-Factor X-Ceptionals (Pac, Dharma, Jasper, Zac) took home 1st place in Division 2, while X-Factor X-Citables (Jenna, Kelly, Russ, Peanut, Foxy Lady, Max) were excited to be awarded 5th place in Division 3.

Dogs Day Out in Canberra

Canberra X-Factor joined with the Belconnen Bullets, Tuggeranong Torpedos and K9 Krusaders from Queenbeyan to stage a Flyball demonstration as part of the ACT Government's Dog Day Out at Lake Ginnindera today.
Dogs Day Out is an annual affair that includes structured demonstrations, competitions, and just sheer fun for dogs and their two legged companions.
Our Flyball demonstration included some beginner dogs, a range of experienced dogs, and a team of senior citizens, with 3 dogs over the age of 11 years. The demo ranged from fiercely competitive racing to some moments of absolute hilarity with beginners losing the plot to stagefright or sheer exuberance, and older dogs going on strike due to the warm afternoon sun.
It was a great day, thanks the ACT Government, and to the co-operation of every Canberra team for joining in.

Two Exciting Comps

Two very different comps in two very different locations

SUNSET CLAWS FLYBALL at Belconnen on Saturday 25 October
A beautiful Canberra day at Belconnen's friendly club, running on the dusty, sparse grass we've come to think of as normal in this drought stricken city.
X-Factor X-ceptionals lived up to their name and took 2nd place after an almost faultless comp.
X-Factor X-traterrestrials also unfortunately lived up to their name (space cadets) and were placed, errm, last, due to er, um, some 'unfortunate incidents' including a red card, a black card, and the fact that there were only 5 dogs in the team. Showing the true spirit of Flyball, the remaining three dogs Russ, Kellie and Foxie Lady continued to race (non-competitively) so that their competitors at least had the satisfaction of running against someone! Russ in particular was a trooper, the last one standing at the end of a long and interesting day.

DAPTO FLYBALL AT DOGS DAY OUT, Albion Park Showgrounds on Sunday 19 October
A stinking hot day in a beautiful location running on lush, green grounds the likes of which we're not used to in Canberra. X-Factor X-Press were second in Division 2 with a best time of 20.417. Congratulations to Jenna, who was in this team and who received an encouragement award.
X-Factor X-treme were 3rd in Division 4 with a best time of 26.749 seconds, no thanks to a little black girl (who will remain nameless) who comprehensively shut down and just refused to run.
We were a bit 'short staffed' at Dapto, with several handlers running two dogs each and no 'extras', and so are without photos for this comp.

X-Factor Rocks at Boorowa 08

Canberra X-Factor fielded two teams at the Boorowa Irish Woolfest competition. X-Factor Xceptionals picked up 3rd place in Division 2 and X-Factor Xtraterrestrials came 2nd in Division 3.

Although our Roadies and Rock Star outfits didn't impress the fashion parade judges enough to beat Thunderdogs Circus Clowns and their Circus Dogs (it's true that Thunderdogs did look very co-ordinated and colourful), the Xtraterrestrials took home the Boorowa Inaugural Annual Prize for the team that best expresses the spirit of flyball - we think it's because we can happily field a team that is not going to be the fastest or the most reliable but instead gives everyone, even those who are a bit flighty, or are beginners, or simply have 'blonde moments' (even if they are black or brindle) a chance to run. Xtraterrestrials included three very accomplished and fast dogs: Jenna, Sophie and Beau; who supported the not-so-fast but Reliable Russell and the two ditzy girls Ebbi and Foxy Lady.

Canberra X-Factor is off to a comp in Boorowa this Sunday, so no beginner training this weekend. Boorowa is another fun comp that forms part of the historic town's annual Irish Woolfest. There are celebrations throughout the day and at midday our teams form part of the 'Running of the Sheep', a parade down the main street that features full wool merinos, floats decorated by the community, and, of course, Flyball Dogs!

Kioloa Surf'N'Turf 2008

Neither wind nor rain nor 28 teams in 7 divisions nor an ambitious program of 84 races could stop Kioloa Surf'N'Turf on Saturday 6 September from fulfilling its annual promise of fun, flyball, friendship and more fun. Every time it seemed that the weather would bring the comp to a halt the rain cleared up enough for us to keep on racing, and with expert judging, efficient stewarding and keen teams we were able to complete the program in record time.

Congratulations to long time Canberra X-Factor Flyballer Jock, who gained his Onyx award during the day....a spectacular achievement and well deserved.

The two X Factor teams we sent to the Southerly Muster in Sutherland defied all the odds to come first! It was a great day, with some important milestones for three of our Flyballers.

Sophie managed an incredible 0.000 start........Jasper obtained his first Flyball title.........and (the Barking Mad) Max completed his first full run in a competition.

Now everyone is furiously training for Kioloa Surf'n'Turf on Saturday 6 September. It's a competition we host and traditionally one of the most relaxing and enjoyable comps in the annual Flyball calendar.
